Transgender

What is transgender?

Transgender is a term that refers to those people who cannot feel identified with their gender of birth. This situation occurs in those people who do not feel in conformity with their sex at birth, due to multiple factors.

In this sense, we must point out that the term transgender can include the various identities with which a person can feel identified, differing from their natural gender. People who identify with this term can be called in this way or trans or trans man or trans woman.

These types of people express their identity through their clothing, gestures or behaviors to feel comfortable with themselves. Some people undergo hormonal treatments, others undergo various surgeries or operations in order to adapt their physical condition to the sexual desire or preference they want to appear.

Some transgender people reject the traditional understanding of gender divided into “male” and “female” , and identify only as transgender, intergender, gender fluid, or in other ways.

Transgender people are diverse in their gender identities (the way you feel inside), gender expressions (the way you dress and act), and sexual orientations (the people you are attracted to). When a person’s assigned sex and gender identity match, they are called “cisgender”.

Gender dysphoria

Dysphoria is a term used to define the anguish, anxiety and unhappiness that a transgender person may feel in their state of incompatibility between their physical body and their idea of gender. This term is mostly used by psychologists and medical specialists.

The transgender people can receive a formal diagnosis and thus to receive a specific treatment for gender transition. Some psychologists call it gender identity disorder. It is important to note that although it can cause emotional distress, the disagreement between a person’s body and their gender identification does not in itself represent a mental illness, so the word was changed to reflect this difference.

Sexual orientation

Transgender identity should not be implicated with sexual orientation. Sexual orientation is narrated to the type of lives to which the subject is attracted, which hardly defines him as heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual.

Instead, transgender equivalency refers to the sex with which it identifies: male or female, that is, it refers to what the person is. Therefore, there may be a transgender individual who is heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. Transgender individuals are also represented in the movement that fights for non-discrimination and the right to exercise sexual freedom called LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Transsexual).
