Examples of present continuous in English

Present continuous

It is about describing actions that are already in the process of execution , that is, it is presented at the moment in which it is being spoken. The present continuous is used to describe actions as well as to talk about the future.

The present continuous is formed with the verb to be used in the simple present, such as am, is, are. To this verb, the main gerund verb ending in ing is added.

In an affirmative sentence , it would be structured as follows:

  • Subject + am, is, are + verb ending in ing

Example of present affirmative continuous

  1. I’m watching you / I’m watching you
  2. I’m watching the house / I’m watching the house
  3. I’m talking to him / I’m talking to him
  4. I’m watching television / I’m watching TV
  5. He is talking to her / he is talking to her
  6. He is buying me some things / is buying me some things
  7. Is dreaming of her / is dreaming of her
  8. We are writing a letter / we are writing a letter
  9. Is watching the news / is watching the news
  10. I’m looking to the future / I’m looking to the future

In a negative sentence, its structure is presented as follows:

  • Subject + am not, ins´t, aren´t + verb ending in ing

Examples of negative present continuous

  1. I have nothing to do with you / I have nothing to do with you
  2. He doesn’t look at her / he doesn’t look at her
  3. She doesn’t want to read anything else / she doesn’t want to read anything else
  4. He doesn’t want to make dinner / he doesn’t want to make dinner
  5. He is not paying attention / he is not paying attention
  6. She doesn’t want to watch television / she doesn’t want to watch television
  7. They don’t want to visit / they don’t want to visit
  8. She is not very good at math / She is not very good at math
  9. He doesn’t know how to drive a motorcycle / he doesn’t know how to drive a motorcycle
  10. She doesn’t want to date him / she doesn’t want to date him

In an interrogative sentence, the structure is presented as follows

  • Am, is, are + subject + verb ending in ing

  1. What are you talking about? / What are you talking about?
  2. what are you doing? / What are you doing?
  3. How are you taking it? / How are you taking it?
  4. What are we learning? / What are we learning?
  5. where are we going? / where are we going?
  6. How are they doing with work? / How are they doing with the job?
  7. What do you want to do? / What do you want to do?
  8. what are you doing? / What are you doing?
  9. Why do you blink? / Why are you blinking?
  10. what is she doing? / what is she doing?
