Examples of corrosive products

A corrosive product is one that contains a chemical substance, this is composed of an acid as a base and when it spreads it can cause minimal or irreversible damage to the surface of the object with which it comes into contact. The handling of these products cannot be taken lightly as they can mark a person for life if contact with this substance causes irreparable damage or worse, death.

  • Alkaline Batteries . Alkaline batteries like the famous AA and AAA, work based on a chemical reaction between zinc metal and manganese dioxide. Additionally, they contain a strong alkaline: potassium hydroxide. If the battery were to break in the hands of a person, the potassium hydroxide would immediately cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and in the worst case, if it is inhaled, it could cause respiratory failure.
  • Laundry Detergents . The chemical composition of this product is quite toxic. Some detergents use chemicals such as formaldehyde (a carcinogen), diethanolamine, and nonylphenol ethoxylate. There are scientific studies showing that ingestion or prolonged physical contact with any of these chemicals can result in catastrophic damage to the human body.
  • Dishwasher . There are different types of dishwashers and among the multitude of them they also differ as to how they are chemically composed. Phosphate-based dishwashers do not present seriousness when physically handled, but rather they present ecological damage if they are introduced into the environment. On the other hand, alkaline salt-based dishwashers can be fatal to humans if ingested.
  • You pesticides . Pesticide corrosion on food, living organisms, and the environment can cause an unimaginable number of fatalistic consequences. The determining factor of how severe the effect of pesticide exposure can be depends on how toxic it is and how long the person or body has been in contact with it. Depending on the case, a person or animal can suffer skin irritations, fever, fall into a coma or in the worst case die.
  • Whiteners . These sodium hypochlorite solutions are typically implemented as a disinfectant in pharmaceutical, bioprocessing, and medical device facilities. Typically, bleach is administered 1 cup at a time relative to 9 cups of water. However, if the amount of bleach exceeds the standard bleach / water ratio, it can have detrimental effects on certain metals such as steel and can even cause damage to plastic surfaces.
  • Air Fresheners . This corrosive product is made from chemicals such as formaldehyde and phenol that can cause reactions such as: hives, seizures, circulatory collapse, and death from exposure to this product. These air fresheners are used in the cars of the cars to transmit a clean and fresh aroma and to neutralize unpleasant odors on the object.
  • Furniture Wax . Highly flammable and harmful to the skin, this product is extremely dangerous. As main chemicals, it is composed of phenol and nitrobenzene, which are already highly toxic and are easily absorbed by the skin.
  • Antibacterial Cleaners . The main component of most of these products contains triclosan. Although triclosan is an agent designed to fight bacteria and other dangerous microorganisms, there are several studies that show that prolonged exposure or accidental ingestion of this chemical can cause microbial resistance, skin irritations, endocrine alterations, metabolic alterations, and the tumor development.
  • Sun Blocker . Like dishwashers, these products are massively manufactured by different companies and contain various chemical compositions. Almost all sunscreens have detrimental effects on the environment. However, oxybenzone, retinol palmitate, or vitamin A-based sunscreens contain synthetic estrogens that can penetrate the skin and cause damage to a person’s hormonal system.
  • Drain Cleaner . These products are highly dangerous if a person comes into physical contact with it or in the worst case, swallows it due to mishandling. Chemically they contain bleach, which on contact with the skin can result in burns or severe irritations. If ingested, the esophagus and stomach can suffer irreparable damage. In addition to bleach, drain cleaner contains hydrochloric acid, a chemical that is corrosive to the eyes, skin, and if ingested, it can have detrimental effects on a person’s kidneys, liver, and digestive tract.
