Combustion can be understood as any type of chemical reaction , generally of an exothermic nature and rapid evolution, which presents its evolution or development in a heterogeneous or gaseous phase, going from a liquid or solid to a gas.
Combustion can occur through visible radiation or some type of flame. Some speak about this type of reaction as the one generated by the oxidation produced in a rapid and accelerated way in most cases, of materials called fuels.
This type of combustible materials are made up mostly of carbon, hydrogen and in some cases we can also find sulfur . All this in the presence of oxygen better known or known as the oxidizer , releasing a large amount of heat when combustion begins.
Functionally speaking, we can say that combustion is the consequence of a physicochemical process through which a part of the energy that is internally found and that makes up the fuel is released in a controlled way, being transmitted externally in the form of heat. which can be used in boilers or ovens.
Combustion can occur in three phases, namely:
- The first phase we can find the decomposition of hydrocarbons that react against oxygen, thus creating unstable compounds that are called radicals.
- In the second stage we can find the oxidation process, where the release of heat occurs.
- The third and final phase consists of the completion of the oxidation process and the production of stable products, which become the components that make up the combustion gases.
Types of combustion
- Complete : in this type of combustion, the oxidation of the components that make it up is complete.
- Incomplete : in this process, the combustion gases have compounds that are partially oxidized.
- Stoichiometric : it is known as the ideal combustion, it is complete and neutral since the exact amount of air is used in it. This type of combustion is generated only in laboratories.
