Characteristics of democracy in Mexico


When speaking of democracy , we refer to the process of participation and communication between the government and popular power.

In democracy, it is the people, through  suffrage , who elect their rulers, in order to represent them during a certain period.

Apart from periodic elections, in a democracy there is a notorious separation of powers, where they collaborate with each other in order to govern in peace, but each one is autonomous in their decisions, that is, there is no intervention of the other powers over your decisions.

In order for the exercise of democracy and the participation of the people to take place effectively , representative groups of the voice of the people must emerge, these are called political parties.

Democracy in Mexico

In this country, democracy is not only focused on one aspect.

It covers various points such as:

  • Compliance with and basic respect for human rights,
  • The free exercise of civil liberties ,
  • The participation of citizens in the process of electing their rulers
  • Equal opportunities.

Currently, democracy is one of the ways of living in peace and harmony among its inhabitants since their opinion and participation is taken into account.

Characteristics of democracy in Mexico

  1. The prevailing democracy in Mexico is indirect and representative.
  2. Its system of government is presidential.
  3. Its levels of government are municipal, state and federal.
  4. Its public powers are called the Supreme Power of the Union , it is made up of three and is divided into: legislative, executive and judicial.
  5. The representation of citizen power is based on a multiparty system , that is, through political parties, the people express themselves.
  6. There are three autonomous electoral institutions, namely: Electoral Prosecutor’s Office, Electoral Tribunal, and the National Electoral Institute.
  7. The president of the United Mexican States is the representative of the executive branch, head of state, head of government of Mexico, and senior commander of the armed forces.
  8. Its main values ​​are freedom and equality.
  9. The legislative power is made up of two chambers, namely: the Senate or Upper House and the Lower House or Chamber of Deputies.
  10. Men are free and equal before the law, insofar as they respect the same.
  11. The vote is done manually.
  12. The election of its rulers is free and secret.
  13. To be able to participate in the election process you must be 18 years of age or older, less than that, is considered a minor and the right to vote is prohibited.
  14. Its fundamental principle is the National Constitution.
  15. There is a presidential leadership , but respecting the autonomy of the other powers.
  16. There are counterbalance and control mechanisms in order to encourage cooperation between the powers.
  17. A fair and balanced political campaign is carried out when the people have to elect their rulers.
  18. There is decentralization in decision making.
  19. The absolute responsibility does not fall only on the President of the Republic, the governors at the regional and local level also have participation.
  20. They are guarantors of the fulfillment of human rights.
