7 Examples of nutrition in living beings

1. Autotrophic

It refers to feeding on oneself, synthesizing organic substances. That is, it is the type of nutrition used by those living beings that can produce their own food.

One of the clear examples of autotrophic nutrition is plants, because they feed thanks to photosynthesis . Living things that carry out photosynthesis are called photolithoautotrophs.

In contrast, those that use elements of a chemical nature are chemolithotrophs. Example: bacteria.

2. Enteral

In addition to the natural way (orally), there are other ways of ingesting food, especially in the cases of patients with special dietary or nutritional needs: enteral.

Enteral nutrition consists of placing food directly into the digestive tract. For example, it is carried out in people who suffer from liver or kidney failure.

3. Heterotrophic

This variant of nutrition is used by living beings that require an already prepared food source, such as animals fungi and most microorganisms.

4. Holozoic

This nutrition is typical of human beings, where an organism consumes solid food and then digests it to absorb the nutrients it needs.

It is divided into 3 ways:

  • Carnivore: the body feeds on meat. For example: the lion that devours its prey.
  • Herbivorous: the diet is based on herbs, grasses, plants and vegetables. Example: the horse, the zebra.
  • Omnivorous: consumption is given by meat and vegetables. Example: chickens.

5. Mixotrophic

Depending on the environmental conditions, mixotrophic organisms can adopt autotrophic or heterotrophic nutrition.

That is, according to their needs: they obtain energy from light or chemical reactions, and the carbon supply can be organic or inorganic in nature.

Mixotrophs are living beings excellently adapted to the environment, and it is believed that half of the plankton (microorganisms that inhabit surface waters) are mixotrophs.

Another of our examples of the nutrition of living beings are carnivorous plants, which obtain carbon and energy from living beings (generally insects) that they capture and consume.

They do this despite the fact that their main mode of nutrition is the autotroph.

6. Parasite

In this variant, the living being coexists on or within another organism that it harms and from which it obtains its nutrients, either by absorption or by ingestion.

Among our examples of parasitic nutrition are ticks, worms, and lice, which feed on other living things without killing them.

7. Symbiotic

We will begin by clarifying what symbionts are: they are organisms that feed on another in a close or non-harmful bond, for the second.

Example 

Corals have symbiotic links with algae. For their part, lichens are symbiotic organisms made up of fungi and plants.

At some level, all living things are symbiotes. The most palpable example is given by some bacteria in the human digestive system.

They are essential for the immune response to certain pathogens or the synthesis of nutrients.
